Paul, the Oracle Octopus, dies of natural causes
By Dana Khraiche
Phone calls flooding the office lines, murmuring about someone famous’ sudden death; it is in fact Paul, the German octopus.
We are all familiar with Paul who predicted the wins of every Germany game but the final during Euro Cup 2008 and also predicted Germany games during 2010 World Cup; his predictions were 100% correct throughout the world cup.
Paul correctly predicted the outcome of the semi-final of the World Cup 2010 by choosing the food in the box with the Spanish flag. German fans hoped Paul could be mistaken since he predicted a win for Germany at Euro 2008, but Paul was right. This made many German fans angry at Paul, this poor fellow, demanding he be served on a platter sans vegetables!
Apparently Paul died of natural causes on October 26th, don’t be too suspicious since the average life of an octopus is actually three years; Paul was hatched in 2008. Even though Paul was not so average, he is, at the end of the day, an octopus.
Aside from Diego Maradona, the most entertaining phenomena at this year’s world cup was Paul; German fans eagerly waited to see what Paul would predict for their team’s next big game. Speaking of Maradona, if there was one person who would be somewhat suspected of harming this sea creature, would be Maradona and his poisonous lips.
Paul will be truly missed at the next Euro and World Cup, but hey, I hear there’s a flying monkey in Argentina, maybe he’s the next big Paul…or not!
RIP Paul
